Gold was found in the Shire of Coolgardie in 1892, and in the height of the gold rush there were 700 mining companies working there. Today, it is known as the ‘Mother of the Goldfields’.
Visitors to Coolgardie can delve into the Shire’s gold rush history with a visit to the Coolgardie Visitor Centre and Goldfields Exhibition Museum.
“The Coolgardie Visitor Centre helps keep the history alive in the Shire, and is a fantastic tourist attraction in our 121-year-old, beautiful building, built in 1898,” explains Community Development Manager, Leanne Shilton.
“Take your time and immerse yourself in this amazing history that we've captured within our building and the collections. Don't forget to look at the Waghorn Bottle Collection.”
The Waghorn Bottle Collection is the largest of its kind in Australia, and some of the pieces within the collection date back to 300BC. Other areas of the museum to explore include the Varischetti Mine Rescue Display and the Pharmacy Collection.
