There’s History Waiting to be Discovered in Southern Cross

Next time you visit Southern Cross, stop in at the Shire of Yilgarn’s museum.

The Yilgarn History Museum in Southern Cross is located in the original Registrar’s building, which was built in 1892 during WA’s gold rush. “People such as Paddy Hannan and Bailey, and other early prospectors registered their claims here,” says Asset Management Officer for the Shire of Yilgarn, Robyn Downes.

The Shire of Yilgarn was founded on both agriculture and mining and the museum has a wealth of artefacts and records relating to both. Robyn, who also volunteers at the museum, explains,
“we have plenty of documents and objects from early pioneer families, farming, mining, railways, and the Water Corp.”

Displays include a mineral and rock collection, a prospector’s camp and photos of servicemen from the Shire. The museum is the perfect place to delve into Yilgarn’s history and to learn about the local community.

“The next time you're passing through Southern Cross, call in to our friendly little museum. We have tourist information and we're open most days,” urges Robyn.

More information can be found on the Shire of Yilgarn website.
