Shire President Ray Harrington shares his experience on Council.
West Arthur is 2,850 square kilometres and encompasses the townsites of Darkan, Duranillin and Arthur River. The Shire’s Administrative centre in Darkan is a comfortable 2 ½ hour drive from Perth, and is 60km from Collie, 74km from Narrogin and 115km from Bunbury.
Ray says he joined Council as there was a vacancy and he felt it was his turn to help the community through his actions on Council.
“My role on Council, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it – and I didn’t notice any difference really to my role on other boards in the grain industry,” he says.
Ray says some of the Councils most recent achievements have been to relocate the Sports Centre and double the size of their Community Resource Centre.
“The way our Council actually helps the community is seeing the problems, and then showing some leadership and guidance and then trying to supply a little bit of cash, not a lot, but then trying to help them through the maze and get funding for projects.”
“Next time you're traveling south down the Albany Highway, get to Williams and turn right and come into the West Arthur Shire and then head south further to our jewel in the crown; Lake Towerrinning, then you can head back down to Kojonup and get back on the Albany Highway.”
