Watch the sunrise in Wongan Hills

Stuart Taylor, Shire CEO tells us what he loves about the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu.

Located two hours north-east of Perth, Wongan Hills is a charming country town with a strong community spirit. The Shire of Wongan-Ballidu covers this vast rural area, up to Ballidu in the north and Burakin in the east.

Shire CEO Stuart Taylor says that what makes the Shire special is the people. “It has an amazing community, very progressive and very supportive of each other” he says.

The area is also known for striking bush walking trails and spectacular flora and fauna.

Mount Matilda can be found 12km west of Wongan Hills and is one of WA’s top walk trails. It has amazing views - the highest point of the reserve sits 434m above sea level.

“My favourite spot in the Shire is Mount Matilda, it is absolutely beautiful, the views are stunning it is a great place to just spend the day” says Stuart.

There are two trail options at Mount Matilda, the 5km ‘Wildflower Trail’ and the longer 8km loop to Speakers Chair.

Visitors can also go wildflower spotting from July to October around Lake Ninan, Mount O'Brien, and Reynoldson Reserve. Lake Ninan is most spectacular at sunrise for keen photographers, reflecting off the clear skies.
