The Gateway to the Goldfields

The Shire of Yilgarn may not be large in size, but there is plenty for visitors to enjoy.

Located 370km east of Perth, the Shire of Yilgarn is often referred to as ‘the Gateway to the Goldfields’. Shire CEO, Peter Clarke encourages anyone travelling that way, to take some time to explore.

“Southern Cross and the Yilgarn Shire has some great sights to visit,” explains Peter. There is Karalee Rock, Lake Koorkoordine and Wimmera Hill to name just a few. “Karalee Rock has this magnificent flume that was constructed to get the water coming off the rock down into a dam”.

The main town in the Shire is Southern Cross, which the Great Eastern Highway passes through. This makes it an easy place for visitors to find and explore.

“We're a good country, for hardy people, and a very welcoming community,” says Peter.
