Separating Sheep at Katanning Saleyards

Katanning Saleyard Manager Rod Bushell shows how he separates sheep ready for sale at the largest undercover saleyard in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Shire of Katanning own the facility including the land and are in charge of maintenance, building and the entire structure.

Rod says his role is to look after the facility and prepare the stock for sale.

“All you need is – obviously sheep – and a bit of knowledge on how to present them in an orderly
manner,” Rod says.

“The stock are unloaded at one end but usually they come in a mixed variety, so we run them down a race where there's four gates and we split them into categories so that they look much the same for sale.”

Rod says when sending stock to the yards, it’s very important for all paperwork to be in order, with stock branded and earmarked and not sick or injured.

“It’s quite different do anything you’ll see, so next time you’re visiting Katanning, do visit us.”
