Rewarding Role for Rockingham Mayor

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels talks about why he joined the Council, and how the Council helps the community of 140,000 residents.

My name is Barry Sammels. I'm the Mayor of the city of Rockingham. I do love my sport and I do love walking my dog.

I got elected in 1997 and I became the Deputy Mayor in 2001 and 2003 I was elected the Mayor so nearly coming up to 16 years as the Mayor of the City of Rockingham.

I became involved... I guess I was influenced by a number of people including a former mayor, who asked me to consider running for Council which I hadn't previously done that. But I would tell people and suggest to people to try it sometime, you get some great rewards.

Rockingham is where the coast comes to life. We've got some beautiful beaches down here, we've got a great lifestyle, we've got 140,000 people living here now and the people that live here, they're committed to sport, they love their facilities and they love the area. The City of Rockingham helped our community, I think, like any other Local Government. We're here to help and assist in any way we can.

Rockingham is where the coast comes to life. We have a number of events, we have a great community with sporting clubs as well. We invite anybody to come to Rockingham.

Rockingham is where the coast comes to life. We invite you all to come down and visit us sometime.
