The Shire’s newest cultural hub is waiting to be explored.
In 2018, the Shire of Northam opened the Bilya Koort Booja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge in the town of Northam. Located in town, on the banks of the Avon River, the Centre is focused on the culture and history of the local Nyoongar people.
The cultural hub features spaces and interactive displays that detail the six traditional Aboriginal seasons and the history of the Ballardong Region and its people.
The Centre’s manager, Michelle Winmar explains that the Centre isn’t just a place for tourists to visit; “It's about reconciliation, so it's about bringing Aboriginal people together with other groups. It's also, most importantly, about cultural revival for Nyoongar people.”
To thoroughly enjoy the Bilya Koort Booja, Michelle recommends a visit of at least three hours. During that time, visitors can be fully immersed in the Ballardong Nyoongar culture and history.
