Diversity on Council in Shark Bay

Shire of Shark Bay Councillor Ben Bellottie talks about his role on Council and his aim to get more people involved in local decision making.

Hi my name is Ben Bellottie. I'm from Shark Bay and I sit on the Council.

As my role as Shire Councillor, I'd like to be able to get more people more involved in and what the Council involves and just in general as a place to make things better for the place, for people to live and place to visit.

I think it's very important for indigenous people to be involved in Council and what we do and what we achieve.

They can bring their stuff to the table that we can discuss and get a bit of culture in our Council. And our Council at the moment they're doing that pretty well.

I think just in my time as Councillor we've done a brilliant job. We've had our Dirk Hartog island celebrations, we've just had the French (Festival Program) and we've achieved a lot in the beautification of our foreshore and generally in the town in general. And I think it's important for people to see that.

The feedback we get from people/ visitors - they're pretty impressed with what we've got as a small town but I would like the message to go out for more people to get involved in their various Councils so they can bring their issues to the table and deal with them in another Local Government.
