Capturing the Shire of West Arthur

Kerryn Chia offers some tips for taking great photographs.

Shire of West Arthur Projects Officer and Darkan Photography Group member, Kerryn Chia is passionate about portrait photography. Largely self-taught, Kerryn explains that a good photo is not dependant on an expensive camera.

“Specialist equipment is great, but not necessary. Fantastic photos can be taken on something as simple as a phone camera.”

In early 2019 the ‘Faces of West Arthur’ photography exhibition was on display in the West Arthur Community Resource Centre before being displayed on the Yagan Square Digital Tower in Perth. “Next time you are in the Shire of West Arthur, stop and have a chat with some of the locals that feature in these photos”, urges Kerryn.

Ms Chia’s tips for getting great results when taking portrait photos include checking the background, the lighting, and ensuring that there is a catch-light in the person’s eye. More importantly you should ensure that the subject is comfortable. “If you can relax them and have a laugh with the person, they’ll enjoy having their photo taken a bit more”.
