A Modern Town With a Historical Heart

Shire of Katanning CEO, Julian Murphy explains what makes Katanning and the surrounds so special.

With 109 Heritage Listed buildings and places around Katanning there is no denying that there is plenty of history to discover when visiting the Shire, but you may also be surprised to learn that this rural Shire in the heart of the Great Southern is very diverse.

The Katanning community has 50 language groups spoken within it and “Katanning is one of the most multicultural towns in Western Australia,” explains Shire CEO, Julian Murphy.

“When you're in our region, come to Katanning. Take the time to stop, enjoy our local history, but also embrace our multicultural community.”

Building on the strong agricultural industry that Katanning has, the Shire (with some State and Federal funding) constructed, and now operates “the largest undercover sheep sale yards in the southern hemisphere”. Visitors can watch the sheep unloading on Tuesday afternoons, or even attend a Wednesday auction.

Julian encourages you to visit the Shire of Katanning and “stay one or two nights”. Find out more about what you can see and do when in the Shire, by clicking here.
